Ganpati Temple

Location: On a little hillock
Ganpatipule is home to a 400 year old idol of Lord Ganesh, the highest revered deity of Western India. It is supposed to have unearthed itself on its own and hence is also called ‘Swayambhu’. This statue is enshrined in a dainty looking temple that comprises of the most veritable attraction of this sleepy little hamlet. The Ganpati that is worshipped here is one of the Eight most auspicious idols of the deity in India. What makes the god here even more unique is the fact that unlike all the rest, he is seen as facing the west. The native people are of the belief that this is part of the divine plan in order to protect the people of the town from the evil forces of the West. Hence he is also known as ‘Paschim Dwardevata’ (Western Sentinal God of India).
The temple is located on a little hillock. The devotees circumnavigate the hill (Pradakshina) as a mark of respect and devotion for the God. Millions of devotees and pilgrims throng the temple grounds every year, particularly on special occasions like Chaturthi, and Holi.

Ratnagiri

Location: 25km from the main town of Ganpatipule
Ratnagiri is the headquarters of the region and is located 25km from the main town of Ganpatipule. Despite being aglow in its own right, Ratnagiri has a mythical link to boast of. It is said that this was the place that the Pandavas had settled in after a period of 13 years that they had spent in exile. Today Ratnagiri is not only an important post of the Western part of the country but is also known to be a productive and thriving agricultural town of Maharashtra.
Ratnagiri houses the famous Thibaw Palace. This is the place which witnessed the enslavement of the last king of Burma, Thibaw, by the British in 1885. Ratnagiri is also the birthplace of the renowned national leader, Lokmanya Tila.. His house has now been turned into a memorial hall that preserves his memories. It is looked after and run by the local communities. Another vital attraction of Ratnagiri is the Patit Pawan temple. It has been dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This temple is also special because of its founder, i.e. Shri Veer Savarkar, a social activist and also the first non-Brahmin to build a religious place. The Coconut Research Center near Ratnagiri is another notable place for the travelers.

Malgund

Location: In district Kangra
Located about a kilometer away from the main town of Ganpatipule is this small village of Malgund. This is a must visit for the admirers of Marathi literature, as the village marks the birthplace of the famous poet Kavi Keshavsoot who has made immense contributions to Marathi poetry. His native house has been converted into a Student’s Hostel by the Marathi Sahitya Parishad.

Velneshwar

Location: North of the Shastri River
Located north of the Shastri River is this small village of Velneshwar that is the site of one of the most ancient Shiv temples of Maharshtra. The scenic beauty of the petite settlement is captivating and is capable of refreshing the mind of any soul. The lovely rows of palm and Mangrove that embroider the golden beach here, is a must see for all tourists to Ganpatipule. Velneshwar should ideally be paid a visit during the Mahashivratri, when hundreds of devotees of Lord Shiva throng this place and this tiny hamlet comes alive with piety and enthusiasm.

Jaigad Fort

Location: About 35km from the town of Ganpatipule
Jaigad Fort is about 35km from the town of Ganpatipule. It is situated at the mouth of the Sangameshwar River and offers one of the most premier views of the Rural Konkan Lifestyle. The Fort also provides a bird’s eye view of the entire coastal area of Ganpatipule.

Pawas

Location: Very close to Ganpatipule
Pawas is a small village located not very far away from Ganpatipule. Set amidst a tranquil and lovely elegance of nature, Pawas houses the Ashram of Swami Swaroopanand, a religious leader who had been able to successfully influence an entire generation of Maharashtrians.
