How To Reach Tuticorin
By Air: Tuticorin Airport, positioned approximately 14 kilometers from the heart of the city at Vagaikulam is the nearest airport from here. A daily flight is in operation between Tuticorin and Chennai which is directed by Kingfisher Airlines. One can hire a cab and reach Tuticorin from the airport. Taxis are easily available here. Tuticorin Airport was closed down to commercial traffic for some years but it was reopened recently in April 2006. The State Government is contemplating the renovation and modernization of Tuticorin Airport. They are planning the extension of the runway and make the airport bigger so that it can handle bigger aircrafts and more air traffic. Other targets on the list are converting the airport to a green field airport and availing a night landing facility. Madurai International Airport located about 160 kilometers from Tuticorin is the closest international airport from here.
By Rail: Tuticorin Railway Station, functional since 1899 is one of the oldest train stations of the country. Several important towns and cities of the country like Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Dindigul and Tiruchendur can be accessed via rail from here. Pearl City Express, a daily plying train is the most convenient option available from Tuticorin Station. This Railway Station was regarded to be a Model Station in the year 2007. There is one more train hub in Tuticorin which is named Tuticorin Melur. Both the train stations of Tuticorin are undergoing certain infrastructural developments. It is expected that the construction of a permanent double track between Dindugul and Tuticorin and the electrification of the Madurai – Tuticorin line will be completed by March 2012.
By Road: Tuticorin is connected with other parts of the country via several highways like NH 7-A (Tuticorin – Palayamkottai), NH 45-B (Tuticorin – Madurai – Trichy), Tuticorin – Ramanathapuram State Highway and Tuticorin – Palayakayal – Tiruchendur State Highway. NH 45B and NH 7A are presently being converted to a 4-lane Expressway. Regular Buses connect Tuticorin to other cities and towns in and around Tamil Nadu. Some of the destinations that have direct bus services from Tuticorin are Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Trichy, Palayamkottai, Vellore, Tiruchendur and Palayakayal. Usually buses charge around 150 to 500 rupees.
By Sea: Tuticorin Port possesses 1 Passenger Jetty, 1 Shallow Water Berth, 2 Coal Jetties, 1 Oil Jetty and 9 Cargo Berths. The depth of the basin and the canal will be increased in a near future and then the Tuticorin Port will be able to handle the vessels up to 12.8m draft. The current capacity of the Tuticorin Port is about 20.55 million tones. A luxury ocean greyhound - The Scotia Prince and Flamingo Liners provide ferry services between India and Colombo. Tuticorin is the only port of the country which conducts a weekly direct cargo service between India and USA. Tuticorin has also instituted the direct sea routs with China, Europe, and some other ports at the threshold of the Red Sea.
