Pune, Nested in the picturesque Sahyadris (the Western Ghats), just 150 km south of Mumbai, Pune is a contrast of history and modernism. Base of the Great Maratha Emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji and the Peshwas, the city has been a cultural capital of Maharashtra for centuries. Pune is considered as the Oxford of India with its many educational and research institutions apart from other institutions for sports, yoga, ayurveda, culture and social services.

Following is the list of some of the important areas and places in Pune city :
Laxmi Road : Your visit to Pune is incomplete if you have not visited Laxmi road at least once. When you come to the Laxmi Road, you have entered the real heart of Pune city. You can easily judge this for yourself looking at the crowd and the hustle and bustle on this road as well as on any of the countless narrow side streets that crisscross it. " Laxmi " is the goddess of wealth & as you start your shopping on Laxmi road, you will really feel as if the Goddess of Wealth has showered her blessings on this road.This road, which starts at the Alka Talkies Square and running right through the heart of the old city, terminates in the Cantonment area, has an overall length of 4k.m. in all & over 90 percent of this length is literally lined with shops on both sides. You can find shops of the widest range of articles on Laxmi Road. But it is mainly famous for its hundreds of shops of garments of all varieties, suitable for all climates and purses. Jewellery shops take a distant second.
Bajirao Road and Tulsi Bag : Named after Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa the first, who was well known for his gallantry, intelligence as well as his artistic personality, Bajirao Road has its own place in Pune's map. The famous one-man museum, the Raja kelkar Museum is situated on Bajirao Road. One of the City's principal telephone exchanges, again named after Bajirao Peshwa is also on this road. Bajirao road provides excellent opportunities for shopping. Mainly garment shops, furniture shop and presentation article shops are situated on this highly crowded road with an approximate overall length of about 2km. As you come to Bajirao road where it intersects Laxmi Road and turn to your right towards Tilak Road, immediately on your left side you will find probably the noisiest and the busiest part at Pune the famous shopping area of Tulsi Bag and beyond that, the huge fruits and vegetable market of Mahatma Phule Mandai.

Mahatma Gandhi Road : East street as well as Mahatma Gandhi Road both start exactly where Moledina Road ends, in the Ambedkar Square and run parallel for most of the way. They meet the Shankarshet Road which later comes on the Pune-SolapurHyderabad highway. As you go along East street towards Shankarshet road the world famous race course Of Pune lies about half a kilometer to your left. Both East street and Mahatma Gandhi Road are very good shopping areas, but the Mahatma Gandhi Road is much more so.
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Deccan Gymkhana) :
As you leave behind the hustle and bustle of the main city of Pune and cross the river Mutha using the Lakdi Bridge, you enter the triangular area of Deccan Gymkhana . From the point of view of shopping, the area is so small that you can easily cover it within 15 minute of walking.but doesn't say it all about Deccan Gymkhana, even from the viewpoint of shopping. As soon as you cross the Sambhaji Bridge, you enter the main shopping area at Deccan Gymkhana. This compact, triangular area is so fill of shops of just about all kinds, that it is only to be seen to be this area are full of shops. This area is the real shopper's paradise. There is even a Hong- Kong lane here. Just before you start ascending the triangular Garware Fly-over the beautiful bronze statue of Chattrapati Shivaji, big square, the Gokhale Square you turn to your right. The Ferguson Collage Road starts from this square. Then going along the tree-lined street, once again you turn to your right at the triangle of roads. The Jangli Maharaj Road starts from this point and leads to your left Turning to your right you come to the main city bus terminus at Deccan Gymkhana. After this now if your turn to the left, you again start going to the Sambhaji bridge.that's all. The area in between this triangle is the Deccan Gymkhana. But within this triangle all kinds of shops and restaurants are there to satisfy your every whim and fancy.

Festivals : During any festive season, the whole city of Pune brightens up and there is lot of excitement in the air.
If you drop in during any of the festival time, watching or taking part in the festivities can be an interesting experience.
The Ganesh Festival : While Ganesh Chaturti is celebrated all over India,the festival is most extravagant & its best at Pune. Traditionally a household affair, it was converted into a public celebration a century ago whn the freedom fighter ,Lokmanya Tilak,used it a unite the masses for the freedom struggle.Ganesh(or ganapati),is after all, the remover of all obstacles.At the end of 11th day festival,plaster and clay images of Ganesh,some of them six metres high are taken from homes and street mandals (shrines)and carried in huge processions to be immersed in water. In Pune it is done down by the river.
Pune Festival : The procession of Lord Ganesh is also the climex of the very popular " Pune Festival " -classical dance and music concerts, folk dance , a village festival including bullock cart races and wrestling.
MAKAR SANKRANTI : This festival generally falls in the month of January.People celebrate it by giving " Tilguls " & specially made sweet " Laddos " to each other & even if possible by flying kites.
Diwali Festival : The Diwali night in particular is a delightful feast to watch. Myriad's of oil lamps embellish the exteriors of all houses on this ammavasyaa night. On the same night "La xmi Poojan " is held and the Goddess is venerated. Legend has it that Laxmi the Goddess of wealth visits all the houses hence all the houses are well-lighted and kept open. For children this night presents a climax of the excitement which gripped them days ago. Colorful firecrackers are lighted and burnt. Diwali also ushers the" Hindu New Year ".
Dussehra (Oct- Nov) :
The festival which is supposed as " The entry of Gods"is celebrated in pompous style The festival attracts lots of devotees.
Mahashivratri :
On this day every Shiv Mandir is decorated.Lord Shiva is supposed to be very sacred & attracts lots of deities not only from Belgaum but also from distant places.
RamNavmi : Lord Rama's birthday is celebrated with great happiness & is believed to bring peace of mind & happiness to the people. |
