By Air: The Veer Savarkar International Airport, also known as the Port Blair Airport and located about 2 kilometers to the south of the Port Blair City is the premier airport of the Andaman Nicobar Islands that connects the mainland India to this union territory by air. Operated by the Airports Authority of India, this public aviation base handles 7,078 annual aircraft movements (approx.). The chief airlines catering services at the Port Blair Airport include Air India, Air India Regional, GoAir, Jal Hans, Jet Airways, JetLite, Kingfisher Airlines, SpiceJet, etc. The Port Blair Airport is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bhubaneswar and the famous Havelock Island by air.
By Boat: Port Blair, one of the foremost notified ports of the Indian Government and the principal shipping hub of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands operates sailing services between the mainland India and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar on a regular basis. A fleet of 80 ships is managed by the Directorate of Shipping Services at Port Blair which provides 4 types of basic services viz. Mainland to Island Service, Inter Island Service, Foreshore Service and Harbor Ferry Services. Various ships and cruises sail from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam to Port Blair twice or thrice a month. The passage between mainland India and Port Blair takes approximately 50 to 60 hours of time. The fare per berth differs according to the vessel you opt for. It generally ranges between 1,510 INR and 5,880 INR. Some of the major vessels plying to and fro Andaman & Nicobar include M.V.Nicobar, M.V.Nancowry, M.V.Swarajdweep, M.V.Harshvardhana, M.V.Akbar, etc. Apart from that, ferry boats are operated between Port Blair and other islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago. For visiting the Andaman Islands the foreign tourists need to obtain permit from the Deputy Secretary, Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs - Port Blair. This permit is valid for about 15 days. Foreigners are not allowed to visit Nicobar and other southern island groups. Tourists can not carry the corals of Andaman & Nicobar out of these islands.
