Ooty Culture


Ooty, deliberately propagated as a hill resort has today become a favorite tourist destination and a popular hill station known in every quarters. The city culture, people and their economy are converted to a closely knit module where all their activities circle around tourism. Other than tourism, another factor that mightily supports the economy of Ooty people is agriculture.
The largest retail market of India is located in Ooty. Various research institutes like ‘Human Biological Institute’, ‘soil conservation center’, ‘potato research farm’ and ‘livestock farm’ are stationed here. Hindustan Photo Films is a very important industry based in Ooty. Several cottage industries like carpentry, chocolate making, homemade pickles, and so on are also flourishing here.
Ooty is quite famous all over the map for its Tea, Spices, Herbal Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Home Made Chocolates, Varkey (traditional Ooty Biscuits), Gourmet Cheese, Bee Honey, Bee Wax, Handicraft items, Toda embroideries, etc. Apart from being a mind blowing hill station, the Elite class of the country is familiar with Ooty for its modernized and efficient Boarding Schools. Ooty has been declared as no plastic zone and living an Eco-friendly life is the major mission of this region. Plastic bags are thoroughly banned here and people use eco friendly paper bags.
Major festivals celebrated at Ooty include; Tea & Tourism Festival, Thaipoosam, Mariamman Temple Annual Festival, Car Festival, Boat Race, Boat Pageantry, Flower show, Summer Festival, Dog Show, Fruit Show & Vegetables show and World Tourism Day. All of the festivals are organized by the combine efforts of tourism department of Ooty, Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India Tourism Ministry. Other that that, many cultural programs and fashion shows are also organized here.
Tamil is the state language, but the major languages spoken at Ooty are Tamil, Kannada, English and Hindi. Natives as well as tourists can be seen here wearing warm woolen clothes all round the year.
