Adventure Sports in Ooty


Hang Gliding
Kalahatty, nestled in the Nilgiri Mountain Ranges nearly 20 kilometers from Ooty is a world-class hang gliding spot. Hang Glider is a kind of large kite. You are tied to it and suspended from the top of a mountain. You fly over the green mountain ranges, dense forest, waterfalls and beautiful streams. Kalahatty is the launch area from where these hang gliders are suspended. Summer is the best season for hang gliding in Ooty and training courses for the are organized in the town from March to May.
Horse back riding
This is a very popular adventure sport sought after in Ooty. A tourist can hire a horse from the lakeside and take a short ride around the Ooty Lake or visit the beautiful countryside in and around the town on the horse back. It is recommended that you should have some basic knowledge about horse riding. Though the guides are available, they are not conversant with English and teaching everything is not possible in such a short span of time. Summer is the best season for horse riding in Ooty, especially from 15th April to the closing of June. The 2.4 km long race course of Ooty is considered to be one of the best race courses in India.
Trekking
The Nilgiri Mountain Ranges, rightly known as trekker’s paradise, provide the excellent trekking opportunities for the adventure seekers. The trek routs in the Nilgiri Mountains near Ooty differ in altitude, distance and geography. There are treks everywhere. Begin anywhere and your trek starts. A base camp called Parsons Valley is a famous starting point for trekking. Madumalai Sanctuary is situated at the juncture of Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats, which opens up many new treks. Nilgiri Wildlife and Environment Association (NWLEA) can give you the necessary information about trekking as well as a guide can be hired if necessary.
Boating
Boating is a favorite adventure sport that interests the tourists of all ages. Paddleboat, rowboat or motorboat can be hired and one can enjoy boating in the several lakes situated in and around Ooty.
Fishing
Lakes like Avalanche and Sandinalla offer fishing opportunities. But that requires prior permission obtained from the department of Fisheries. The department is parked near the main bus stand of Ooty. Assistance Director of the department is in charge of issuing the fishing license.
