How To Reach Matheran

By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport of Mumbai located about 90 kilometers away from Matheran is the nearest air terminus from this hill station. Apart from the local train, the Deccan Exp and Koyna Exp can also be availed to reach Neral from Mumbai. From Neral Station the Toy Train runs to Matheran four times a day which generally goes full. The 2nd class ticket costs about 35 Rs while the first class ticket costs nearly 200 Rs. Traveling through the winding roads of the Matheran Jungles is certainly a memorable experience. To reach Neral Railway Station from Pune you will have to board a train bound to Karjat and from their get into a train to CST and get down at Neral. By Road: Matheran is located 90 kilometers away from Mumbai and 120 kilometers away from Pune. Tourists can reach Neral from Mumbai or Pune using a train and then hire a cab from Neral to Matheran. A cab will cost you about 300 Rs while a seat in a shared taxi will cost just 60 Rs or so. From the Taxi Stop of Matheran you can either walk to the main market of Matheran or hire a horse that would charge you about 200 Rs. Another alternative is to use the state transport bus that plies from Dasturi Park of Matheran to Neral and Karjat. Tourists can also undertake the entire journey to Matheran by road using their private vehicle or rented cab. The old Mumbai-Pune National Highway No 4 and the Matheran Hill Ghat Road will reach you to Matheran from Mumbai and Pune. The vehicle will be parked at the Matheran Car Parking at the payment of fixed fees and you will have to use manual hand pulled carts, horses or your own feet for the further commute as vehicles are not allowed beyond this point.
