Kumarakom Boat Race

Kumarakom celebrates the traditional festival of Kerala viz. Onam with ultimate gusto and enthusiasm. This festival having interesting mythological background falls in the month of August or September. At the time of Onam, the backwaters of Kumarakom are electrified and ignited by the vivacious boat races which happen to be the largest team sport in the world. Oodles of ornately carved long black wooden snake boats participate in these boat races. Other traditional forms of boats usually used for fishing or transportation that also partake in the boat races are: Kettuvalam, Kochu-odi Vallam, Odi- Vallam, Irrutukuthi Vallam and Churulan or Chullam Vallam. Generally, a snake boat is ridden by 4 helmsmen, 25 singers and 100 to 125 oarsmen who row the boat in harmony to the brisk rhythms of the traditional boatmen song called Thevanchipattu. Thousands of audience gather at the edges and cheer the boatmen as the huge snake boats dexterously slice through the backwaters. Boat racing is one of the oldest and the most famous events of Kumarakom Culture. Tourists particularly throng Kerala to witness this magnanimous phenomenon of energy exhibited through uniformity.
