How To Reach Jaisalmer

By Air: ‘Jodhpur Airport’, situated about 285 kilometers from Jaisalmer is the nearest airbase from here. Jodhpur Airport is connected with several other Indian cities namely: Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Udaipur and Jaipur. Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher are the major airways that provide daily services from this airport. Jodhpur Airport is mainly used by Indian Air Force and it was most active during the Kargil War of 1999. To reach Jaisalmer from Jodhpur tourists can rent a cab which will charge about 4000 Rs. Or one can even board a state transport bus connecting Jaisalmer to Jodhpur. A dedicated airport in Jaisalmer is under construction and it is expected to be ready for use soon. Recently a military airstrip of Jaisalmer has been made open for certain civilian flights.
By Rail: Jaisalmer Railway Station is one of the important railway stations in western railway zone. Both broad gauge and meter gauge tracks link Jaisalmer to many major cities of India including Jodhpur, Bikaner, New Delhi, Lalgarh, etc. From Delhi there is a direct train Delhi- Jaisalmer Express that connects the two cities. Other trains that originate from Jaisalmer Station are Bikaner Jaisalmer Express, Jodhpur Jaisalmer Express and Lalgarh Jaisalmer Express. Shalimar Express that connects Jaisalmer with Delhi passes via Pokhran; the well known nuclear testing area of India. Jaisalmer is also included in the rout of Palace on Wheels.
By Road: Jaisalmer enjoys a very good connectivity by road. Many state transport and private, both ordinary and AC, deluxe and semi deluxe, sleeper and sitting buses ply from Jaisalmer to various cities like Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Ajmer, Bramer, Jalore, Mount Abu, Ahmedabad, Mumbai etc. Jaisalmer has two major bus stations - Roadways Main Bus Stand (located opposite the railway station) and Golden Bus Terminal (located near State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, Shiv road). The roads of Jaisalmer are very well maintained, especially because it is near the Indo – Pak border. To reach Jaisalmer from Jodhpur or Bikaner, tourists can also rent a cab. Jaisalmer is 150 km from Barmer, 300 km from Jodhpur, 330 km from Bikaner, 440 km from Ajmer, 570 km from Jaipur, 575 km from Udaipur, 630 km from Ahmedabad, 800 km from New Delhi, 800 km from Agra and 1140 km from Mumbai.
By Camel: Reaching Jaisalmer by camel is a hectic yet unique experience. Jaisalmer is very famous for organizing such camel trips. The most hazardous yet exciting excursion is a 14 days journey on the back of a camel from Bikaner to Jaisalmer.
