Ahmedabad is the principal city of Gujrat and is the second largest industrial centre of india.
This city was founded by a Muslim ruler Sultan Ahmed Shah (hence Ahmedabad) in 1411.
In 1615, the British representative Sir Thomas compared this city to London.
Shah Jahan, builder of Taj Mahal, spent the first few years of his married life in Ahmedabad with his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
Ahmedabad also played a prominent role during the freedom movement of India as it was the centre of Mahatma Gandhi's activities for some years.
The city has number of attractions for travellers. It is one of the best places which blends Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. Ahmedabad is an interesting place for those who like to shop and roam.
The bazaar streets are narrow and crowded but lot colourful.
The city lies on the banks of Sabarmati river. Across the river are many buildings and museum. Unlike in other large cities, there's little evidence of the british period in Ahmedabad.
Once upon a time the city was enclosed with walls; now almost all of them are demolished, but some of the gates are still remaining. |

The city of Ahmedabad is famous for its craftsmanship in brass engravings.
Ahmedabad city lures you with a variety of Museums showcasing about anything from exquisite handicrafts, to ancient manuscripts, not to leave aside textiles. Strange as it may seem, Ahmedabad also houses a museum for utensils.
This city is also famous for its hand-woven textiles. People from far away places come here to buy colourfull mirror worked Ghagara-Cholis to wear during the Navratri festival.
Ahmedabad is also known for its silver embriodery and decorative handwork.
Ahmedabad is a city accomodating people from various parts of the country, who brought along with them their own language, arts and crafts, philosophy, social practices and religious life. But largely the people in this region speak Gujarati, with Hindi and English being the other common language. Ahmedabadi's(i.e people living in Ahmedabad) are shrewd businessmen, engaged in trade and industry, But they are gentle and cheerful people always ready to help.

Best Season : Ahmedabad has a very hot and humid type of climate. The temperatures vary greatly between day and night.
The variations stretch to as much as 20c between the maximum temperature in the day and the minimum at night. The temperature during summer soars up to 45 degrees and in winters it dips to as low as 5 degrees.
November to February: max 34c, min 11c
March to June: max 45c, min 20c
July to October: max 34c, min 19c
There isn't substantial rainfall except some showers in July and August,during which time the atmosphere becomes very humid and sultry.
Therefore the best time to visit Ahmedabad is during the months of October and March. |

Festivals : During any festive season, the whole city of Ahmedabad brightens up and there is lot of excitement in the air.
If you drop in during any of the festival time, watching or taking part in the festivities can be an interesting experience.
Apart from major Indian festivals like the Holi and Diwali which are celebrated with traditional fervour and joy, there are a few festivals which are celebrated in special Gujrati style.
Makar Sankranti :
On the 14th January every year through out India Makar Sankranti is celebrated.
In Gujarat and in Ahmedabad particularly the day is celebrated as Kite Festival.
The sky on this day is filled with symphony of colour. Exotic Kites with different shape and size cover the sky on this day every year.
This festival has today acquired international colour with people from round the globe coming here to enjoy the kite flying.
Navratri :
The festival of Navratri originated in Gujrat.It is the festival of Gujrat and is celebrated with great splendour here.
The Gujaratis indulge in two interesting dances, one called Dandia - a stick dance, and another called Garba - a clapping dance
There is a good deal of excitement at the time of any festival, especially through the nine days of Navratri, around Dassera late in September.
The celebrations are for nine days and culminate on the tenth day (Dussera).
The celebrations are dedicated to Goddess Durga but the method of celebrations slightly vary.
Rath Yatra :
In the month of June / July a massive procession is taken out from the Jagannath temple in Ahmedabad.
Amidst the chanting of the sacred and Vedic hymns the chariot is taken out carrying idols Krishna, Balram and Subhadra.
It is very similar to Jagannath Puri's Yath Yatra. |
